A historic night in Marshall

(MARSHALL ) — History was made on Tuesday night in Marshall. For the first time in over 60 years, the Lions hosted a home wrestling match.

Marshall, fielding its’ first wrestling team since the 1960s, faced Robinson in the home opener. Though the visiting Maroons won the dual, 60-9, the event itself seemed as important as the results for many of the fans gathered.

Gage Kent made more history for Marshall in his 157-pound bout against Robinson’s Dalton Kilpatrick. Kent recorded a pin in 1:27 to score the Lions first points of the night as the home crowd erupted.

Thomas Stafford also scored points for Marshall at 190 pounds by holding off Broxton Pethel, 6-4, in the only match of the night to go the distance.

Marshall’s addition brings Little Illini Conference membership in the sport to six schools. And, all six were on hand last Saturday (Dec. 6) along with seven other teams at the Lawrence County Invitational. LIC teams claimed five of the top six spots in the meet. The host Indians won the title with 204.5 points, ahead of a three-team logjam for the runner-up spot. Robinson was next with 169.5 points, with Vandalia third (168), and Olney fourth (163). Paris took fifth (136), and Mt. Carmel claimed sixth (123.5 points).
