(ROBINSON) — In a field half-full of Little Illini Conference teams, Lawrence County’s wrestling team reigned supreme over the entire field, as they claimed the team title at the IHSA Class 1A Robinson Regional Saturday.
The Lawrenceville-Red Hill co-op had 10 wrestlers qualify for Sectional competition – including three individual champions – en route to scoring 229 points to best the other 11 teams in the field. Fithian Oakwood was second with 208.5 points, while another LIC school, Robinson, came in third with 152 points. Cumberland was fourth with 129.5 points, followed by Westville (124), Olney (108.5), Effingham (99.5), Paris (83.5), Mt. Carmel (81.5), Oblong-Palestine-Hutsonville (72), Fairfield (31) and Marshall (24).
In addition to Lawrence County’s 10 qualifiers, the LIC will be well-represented at the Vandalia Sectional, as Robinson had six wrestlers qualify for the next round, while Olney had four and Paris and Mt. Carmel each had two.
Meanwhile, several more LIC wrestlers will serve as alternates after finishing fourth in their respective weight classes, as only the top three finishers in each class move on to the next round.
Sectional competition will begin Friday, Feb. 13, at Vandalia High School and will conclude Saturday, Feb. 14, with the top four finishers in each weight class advancing to the IHSA State Finals Feb. 19-21 at State Farm Center in Champaign.
Meanwhile, Lawrence County also advances to the Taylorville Dual Team Sectional Thursday, Feb. 5, with the winner advancing to the Dual Team State Finals at Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington Feb. 27-28.
