We’re down to this – one last round of Little Illini Conference baseball and softball games on Monday, with both league races still up for grabs.
Here’s the lineup:
Marshall at Mt. Carmel
Newton at Casey-Westfield
Paris at Olney (game will be played at Olney Central College)
Robinson at Lawrenceville
All games begin at 4:30 p.m. CDT
BASEBALL
Casey-Westfield and Olney are tied for the top spot with 5-1 league records, with Mt. Carmel and defending champ Newton one game back, each at 4-2. And, yes, the way the matchups work out, there could be a four-way tie for the championship when the day is over. That’s right – half of the league could be baseball champions!
So, who is the hottest coming in? Casey-Westfield (16-9 overall) has won three games in a row and five of six. Olney (12-11) has won three straight. Mt. Carmel (15-6) has won seven of its’ last nine, while Newton (20-4) has won its’ last three games.
SOFTBALL
About all we know for certain is that Marshall (6-0 LIC mark) has clinched at least a tie for first place in the softball race. That is a first for the 11th-ranked (Class 2A) Lady Lions since 2012, and they can own the title outright with a win in Mt. Carmel (3-3), ranked 13th in 2A.
Robinson (5-1) plays at Lawrenceville (0-6) and a win there coupled with a Mt. Carmel upset would allow the Lady Maroons to share the crown with Marshall. Casey-Westfield, which has been ranked No. 1 in each Illinois Coaches Association Class 1A softball poll this season, is third in the loaded LIC race at 4-2.
That’s the setup. Now get out to a baseball or softball game on Monday and cheer on your favorite LIC team!
