Robinson’s Austyn McDowell wins 100 title to lead LIC at state

(CHARLESTON) — Robinson freshman Austyn McDowell has already left her mark on the Little Illini Conference. Now she’s working on the rest of the state.

In her first-ever appearance at the Illinois High School Association Class 1A state track and field championships at Eastern Illinois University here, McDowell finished first in the meet’s premiere event – the 100-meter dash. She added a second-place finish in the 200, took eighth in the 400, and anchored a sixth-place 4×100 relay team for a total of four medals on Saturday.

Other top LIC finishers in Class 1A included: Marshall senior Molly Farrell, who finished fourth in the 1600 meter run, and the Newton 4×100 relay team of Emma Schumacher, Mariah McVicar, Morgan Schafer, and Stella Schackmann, which finished in third place. Schackmann also took eighth in the 100.

Robinson, the reigning LIC champions, finished in the Class 1A Top 10 with 24 points, good for a tie for eighth place in the final team standings. Three other league teams earned points: Newton (tied for 28th place with 10 points), Marshall (tied for 45th with 6 points), and Casey-Westfield (tied for 51st with five points).

In Class 2A, Keagan Noel of Paris placed fifth in the high jump.
