(ROBINSON) — One full Little Illini Conference girls’ golf team and three individuals are now one step away from playing for a state championship as they advanced out of the IHSA Class 1A Regional tournament held on Tuesday at Quail Creek Country Club in Robinson.
Next up: a berth in the 1A Sectional tournament on Monday at Belk Park Golf Course in Roxana, where they will be grouped along with advancers from Regionals in Carlyle, Waterloo, and Ziegler-Royalton. The 36-hole state final tournament will be played at Red Tail Run Golf Course in Decatur on Oct. 9-10.
Mt. Carmel, the five-time defending state champions, will be in Roxana after finishing third out of 13 teams gathered for the Regional. The Lady Aces finished with a collective round of 348, five shots behind Salem, who won with a 343, three shots better than runner-up Effingham St. Anthony (346).
Just as she had done last week at the Little Illini Conference tournament, senior Leah Correll of Robinson was best-in-field and claimed Regional medalist honors with a 3-under par round of 69. In fact, the top four finishers at Robinson all came from the LIC. After Correll came Haley Ochs and Peyton Lindley of Newton (both tied for second with a 76), and Miranda Kennard of Mt. Carmel (with an 81).
Marshall was assigned to the Mattoon Regional. The Lady Lions finished ninth there with a score of 544. Moweaqua (Central A & M) won the team title with a round of 393. Also advancing was Mattoon (425) and Villa Grove (439). Advancers from Mattoon are assigned to the Rochester Sectional.
Boys Regional play is scheduled for Wednesday.
