(ROBINSON) — The Little Illini Conference has advanced its’ two state-ranked boys golf teams to the IHSA Class 1A Sectionals, after advancing out of Regional tournament play on Wednesday at Quail Creek Country Club in Robinson. Mt. Carmel, ranked third in the latest iWannamaker Class 1A ratings, and No. 13 Casey-Westfield claimed two of the three advancing spots.

A total of six other LIC individuals in two classes will join them at the Sectional level, with an eye towards qualifying for the IHSA state tournaments, Oct. 9-10, in central Illinois.

Mt. Carmel finished second out of 13 teams at Robinson with a final team round of 316, eight shots off the pace set by Regional champion Teutopolis. Casey-Westfield was third with a final total of 330 shots. Newton finished fifth (340), Robinson ninth (357), and Marshall 13th (392) in the final standings. Only the top three teams advance to the next level.

In the Class 2A Regional played at Eagle Ridge Golf Course in Paris, Olney finished sixth with a round of 350, and the host Tigers fook eighth (374). Effingham St. Anthony won with a round of 297. Also advancing from there as a team was runner-up Red Hill (321), and Charleston (324).

Individually, junior Zane Wilcox of Mt. Carmel was the medalist in the Class 1A tourney, firing an even-par round of 72, good for a four-shot victory. Though Newton did not make it out as a team, the Eagles advanced three individuals to the Sectional tourney: Nolen Cleaver,  Jacob Oldham, and Jack James. Robinson’s Ben Coonce also qualified. In Class 2A, Dierks Mitchell of Olney is moving on to the Sectional.

The Class 1A Sectional tournament will be played on Monday at the University of Illinois Orange Course in Savoy, hosted by Monticello. The 2A affair is also on Monday, at Effingham Country Club. The 1A state finals are slated for the Prairie Vista Golf Course in Bloomington, with the 2A finals being played at Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University, Normal.
