The Little Illini Conference had quite a day at the IHSA Cross Country Regional meets held on Saturday. A total of four boys teams advanced from three different Regionals in two classes, along with three individuals not a part of the qualifying teams. On the girls side, four teams made it out from two sites, including one that won the Regional championship. Individually, the LIC produced three Regional champions – two boys and one girl.

It’s off to Sectional meets next weekend, one step removed from the IHSA state finals at venerable Detweiler Park in Peoria.  Here’s a recap:

Boys Meet

The duo of Quaid Berger (Olney) and Harrison Hayes (Paris) put on a show at the recent LIC meet in Robinson, where they finished 1-2 in the boys race. Saturday, they were assigned to different IHSA Regional races, and they did not disappoint. They both won championships  there – Berger in a time of 14:39.24 in the Class 2A meet over the Lake Land College course in Mattoon, and Hayes, who was clocked in 15:26.08 in the Class 1A Regional in Tuscola.

Their respective teams both advanced to the sectional level as well: Olney finished second to Mahomet-Seymour in Mattoon, while Paris was edged by St. Joseph-Ogden in the meet at Tuscola. The top seven teams get to move on, which also includes Robinson and Newton, after their second and third-place finish at the 1A meet hosted by Toledo (Cumberland) but also run at Lake Land.

Also moving on as individuals were: Holden Barthlemy of Newton (17:14.9), plus the Mt. Carmel tandem of Wyatt Rooney (17:33.6) and Eli Wilcox (17:55.4).

Girls Meet

Marshall hosted a Class 1A meet also run on the Lake Land course, and they led an LIC triumvirate at the finish line. The LIC champ Lady Lions took first, followed by Robinson and Newton, in third and fourth place. Olney also hosted a meet in Class 2A, and the Lady Tigers moved on with a sixth-place team finish.

Individually, senior Madeleine Fox of Marshall finished first, just as she did in the LIC race, in a time of 18:09.9.

Also advancing from Marshall were three runners from Lawrenceville: freshman Addison Thacker (19:42.1), Lexi (20:05.4) and Laurel Buchanan (22:19.6), along with freshman Ava Alka of Mt. Carmel (20:39.6).
