IHSA releases golf state series assignments

(BLOOMINGTON) — The Illinois High School Association has released post-season assignment details for the upcoming golf state series. A total of 529 boys teams(242 in Class 1A, 137 in the larger Class 2A, 150 in the largest Class 3A)  and 466 girls teams (283 teams in Class 1A, 183 in Class 2A) will compete for the state championship, which begins with play at the regional level on Tuesday, Sept. 30.

Five Little Illini Conference boys teams compete at the Class 1A level, with the other three teams in Class 2A. All six LIC girls teams play in Class 1A, where Mt. Carmel is the four-time defending state champions.  Here is a breakdown of the upcoming tournament series:

Boys

Casey-Westfield and Marshall join 13 other teams for the Wednesday, Oct. 1 Bismarck-Henning Class 1A Regional tournament, to be played at Turtle Run Golf Club in Danville. Mt. Carmel, Newton, and Robinson will be at Green Hills Golf Club in Mt. Vernon as part of a 13-team Hamilton County-hosted Class 1A field.

LIC advancers could be split up for the Class 1A Sectional tournament, next on Monday, Oct. 6. The top three regional teams and top 10 individuals not a part of advancing teams qualify for Sectional play. But, winners from the Bismarck-Henning regional head north to suburban Elmhurst for the sectional hosted by Timothy Christian and played at Oak Brook Golf Club, while the advancers from McLeansboro play next at the Teutopolis Sectional, to be played on the Effingham Country Club course.

Meanwhile, Olney, Paris, and Red Hill-Lawrenceville all compete at the Class 2A level in boys golf. They will be part of the Effingham Regional field on Oct. 1st at Effingham Country Club. Advancers would next go to the 2A Highland Sectional at Oak Brook Golf Club in Edwardsville on Oct. 6th.

The boys’ state tournaments will be played at Bloomington-Normal area courses over two days and 36 holes on Oct. 10-11. The Class 1A tournament will be played at Prairie Vista Golf Course in Bloomington, while the Class 2A tournament will be played at the Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University in Normal.

Girls

Mt. Carmel, looking for an IHSA record-tying fifth straight girls state title, is the lone Little Illini Conference squad in the 15-team field it will host at West Berwick Golf Course. Four LIC teams – Casey-Westfield, Newton, Olney, and Robinson – will head to Sandoval along with nine other teams for the Class 1A Regional at Colonial Golf Club. Marshall will be one of 14 teams to gather at Moweaqua for the Central A & M-hosted Regional at Moweaqua Golf Course.

The top three teams and top 10 individuals mot a part of advancing teams from those three Regionals – plus a fourth hosted by Champaign St. Thomas More – will all head to the Class 1A Sectional tournament on Monday, Oct. 6. Hosted by Monticello, the tourney will be played on the University of Illinois Blue Course in Savoy.

Red Tail Run Golf Course in Decatur will again host the Class 1A state tournament, a two-day, 36-hole event played on October 10-11.

The State Final for both boys and girls will consist of two 18-hole rounds with the top four scores each day counting in team scoring. After the first day of competition,  the state final field will be reduced to the top eight teams (and ties) and the top 40 individuals (and ties) not on the top eight teams.
