Mt. Carmel scored in the game’s final minute to rally past Paris, 24-20, in a battle of football unbeatens on Friday night. That was the highlight of Week 5 of the prep season, which had more than it’s fair share of excitement. Here’s what took place under the lights:
Mt. Carmel 24, Paris 20
Quarterback River Deisher ran for a 10-yard touchdown, his fourth score of the night, with 42 seconds left to propel the Golden Aces to the win. Paris led 7-0 at the half and 14-6 after three quarters, but couldn’t slow the 18-6 fourth-quarter onslaught Mt. Carmel put together. Deisher rushed for 120 yards on 21 carries, and threw for 229 yards on 14-of-23 accuracy. Paris’ vaunted running attack was held somewhat in check, with 118 yards on 40 attempts. But, the Tigers did some damage in the air. Quarterback Drew Kirby tossed two touchdown passes, one a 15-yard flip to Madox Hutchings with 3:25 left to put Paris back on top, 20-18, setting the stage for the Mt. Carmel heroics. Kirby finished 5-of-7 in the air for 121 yards. He also threw a 60-yard TD to Drew Rogers. Mt. Carmel is 5-0 for the first time since 2022.
Olney 30, Newton 25
Olney kept pace with Mt. Carmel in the LIC race at 3-0, but the Tigers had to hold off a determined Newton team in the end. Olney led, 20-0, at halftime, but Newton scored 18 unanswered points in the third quarter to make a game of it. Maddox Horner scored twice on runs of 53 and 71 yards to lead the Eagles awakening. Olney increased the lead to 30-18 in the fourth, before Eagles quarterback Hayden Mulvey hit Eli Wolf with a 13-yard touchdowns pass with 2:42 left to pull within five points, 30-25. However, Newton could get no closer. Mulvey threw for 135 yards. Olney quarterback Owen Cycholl was 14-of-22 in the air for 239 yards and two TD’s. The Tigers have now won 17 straight LIC games dating back to 2024.
Casey-Westfield 40, Lawrenceville 20
Casey-Westfield unloaded in the first quarter, bolting to a 28-12 lead, before easing away to the LIC win. The Warriors, who face ancient rival Marshall next, improved to 2-3 with the win, while dropping Lawrenceville to 0-5 on the season.
Marshall 20, Robinson 7
Marshall led, 14-7, at halftime before adding an insurance touchdown in the fourth quarter for a 20-7 LIC win. Lions quarterback Luke Brodie threw two touchdown passes to lead the way for the winners. He finished 5-of-9 in the air for 72 yard, while adding a team-high total of 63 yards on the ground in 17 trips. Robinson’s sophomore quarterback Jetson Hoalt countered with 87 yards in the air (hitting 8-of-18 passes) and 84 yards on the ground on 18 carries.
