(OLNEY) — Newton won the Little Illini Conference girls tennis tournament on Friday by the narrowest of margins: one-half point.  The Eagles won the crown with 18 1/2 points, just ahead of defending champion Paris,next with 18. Robinson (15 1/2 points) edged Mt. Carmel (14) to finish third in the final standings. Olney (11) and Casey-Westfield (5) rounded out the order.

The tournament was played on the courts at Olney City Park.

Junior Olivia Sornberger led the Lady Eagles by winning the singles championship, proving her No. 1 seed on the courts by recording three straight-set victories. What also helped Newton over the top were key team points from two unseeded sources: sophomore Jenna Hall in singles, and the doubles tandem of Scarlett Collins/Beth Broscious. Hall made it all the way to the consolation finals in singles, while Collins and Broscious fought their way to a fourth-place finish in doubles.

Mt. Carmel had one seeded entry in the tournament, but the Lady Aces made the most of it. The duo of Hazel Earnest and Alivia Peach made it stand by winning the doubles title.
