(LAWRENCEVILLE) — Olney and Robinson claimed the top spots in the 2026 Little Illini Conference boys and girls track championships, held on May 6 at Lawrenceville High School.

In the boys meet, Olney overwhelmed the field to win its’ fifth straight title, though the 2023 crown was shared with Newton. The Tigers finished with 180 points, with Newton next at 100, two points ahead of Paris’ 98 points. Mt. Carmel wound up fourth (70), followed by Robinson (46), Casey-Westfield (37.5), Marshall (15) and Lawrenceville (6.5).

The girls meet was a more competitive affair, with Robinson claiming the title for the third time in the last four years with an 11-point victory margin. The Lady Maroons finished with 133 points, ahead of Newton’s 122. Marshall took third (81), followed by Paris (74) Olney (63), Casey-Westfield (34), Mt. Carmel (28), and Lawrenceville (16).

BOYS RECAP

Perhaps the greatest assault on the record books of the entire meet came in the boys’ 3200 meter run, where the top three finishers all made history together. Quaid Berger and Judah Dicks, both of Olney, and Paris’ Harrison Hays, became the first LIC runners to break the 10-minute mark – and they did it in the same race. Berger won in a time of 9:33.10, followed by Dicks (9:45.43) and Hays (9:47.60). The previous conference mark of 10:11.29, set by Nick Zwilling of Newton in 2022, is now fourth on the all-time list.

There was also one record set in the 4×400 relay event. Or, was it two, because the top two finishers each eclipsed the previous standard set in 2017.  Celebrating the win was Olney’s relay of Carter Seaman, Tristin Butler, Gavyn Cothern, and Aiden Germak who crossed the line first at 3:28.55, a scant .17 seconds ahead of the 3:28.72 turned in by the Newton quartet of Matthew Haskett, Henry Will, Tanner Whitaker, and Hayden Borgic.

Drake East of Paris wiped out the second oldest record in LIC boys track history. East, a senior, threw the shot put a distance of 55 feet, 5-inches, more than one foot better than the previous record set by Eric White of Marshall in 1975, a mark which had stood for 51 years!

Ian Pianfetti continued Olney’s dominance of the marquis event of the boys meet – the 100-meter dash. Tiger sprinters have won the last five titles, and 10 of the last 13. Pianfetti won in 11.15 seconds, good for his second win in this event (the other coming in 2024).

Pianfetti joined Berger with two individual wins, tops in the meet.

GIRLS RECAP

Austyn McDowell of Robinson may have just pulled off one of the most impressive starts to a prep career in LIC track history. All McDowell did was win the 100, 200, and 400 meter events, all with record-setting performances. Did we mention she is just a freshman? Her 100 time of 12.31 seconds topped the mark set last year by outgoing Robinson senior Mary Elliott (Runnerup Stella Schackmann of Newton also bested the old mark with a time of 12.50. She’s only a sophomore.). McDowell also claimed the 200 in 25.41, taking down the nine-year old record belonging to Faith Frye of Casey-Westfield. McDowell earned the trifecta with a record 59.46 to win the 400 meter crown. She also was on the winning 4×100 relay to make it four wins on the day.

Those were the only individual records set, but there were new marks established in two relay events: the 4×100 and 4×200 relays. Robinson’s McDowell was joined by Zoe Tuttle, Kate Rehmel, and Lillian Brown to win the 4×100 in a time of 49.96 seconds, besting an eight-year old mark. The second-place Newton squad of Emma Schumacher, Mariah McVicar, Morgan Schafer, and Stella Schackmann finished ahead of the old record with a time of 50.83. Robinson claimed the other relay record as well, with the foursome of  Lillie McDonald, Lillian Brown, Laylani Beard, Kate Rehmel clocking in at 1:49.44, wiping out Newton’s 13-year standard.

There were two other athletes with two individual titles in the girls meet: Molly Farrell of Marshall in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs and Zoe Tuttle of Robinson in both hurdle events (110 and 300).
