Hays, Farrell lead LIC runners at major invite

(Paris) — Little Illini Conference runners won both the boys and girls races at a prestigious early-season cross country meet in Paris on Saturday.

There were five LIC teams in the 17-team boys field for the Doc Acklin Cross Country Invitational. Paris finished third, Robinson ninth, Marshall 12th, Casey-Westfield 13th and Newton 15th. Charleston won the event with 72 points, followed by Cumberland’s 84, and Paris with 94.

Individually, Paris junior Harrison Hays won in a time of 18:33:57 on the three-mile course, some 11 seconds better than runner up Trevor Crutcher of Dieterich. Junior Wyatt Harrington of Robinson finished fourth (16:40.25), and another Paris junior Nathan Former took seventh (17:00.40).

Other LIC team leaders included: Steven Hendrixson of Marshall (14th in a time of 17:34.07), Hayden Borgic of Newton (33rd in a time of 18:15.41), and Eli Richardson of Casey-Westfield (38th in a time of 18:24.66). There were a total of 146 runners in the boys race.

In the girls race, Newton finished second in the 11-team field with 62 points, while Robinson took sixth (152 points). St.Joe-Ogden won the team title (38 points).

Marshall did not have enough runners to qualify for the team title, but the Lion runners that were there dominated individually. Senior Molly Farrell and junior Madeline Fox finished 1-2, just as they did in last year’s LIC conference meet. Farrell’s time of 18:54.07 was 39 seconds faster than Fox’s 19:33.40. Freshman Grace Thompson finished fourth (20:08.41), while sophomore Addie Nave took 23rd (22:49.42).

Newton was led by senior Layna Marshall, who finished eighth in a time of 20:34.81. Freshman Heather Bergbower was close at hand, with her time of 20:50.44 netting a 10th place finish. Next was junior Avery Geier (21:34.77, good for 16th), followed by junior Paula Hohn (23rd place, 22:30.74) and freshman Josie Vogt , who wrapped up the Eagle scorers (30th, 23:28.63).

Casey-Westfield senior Kayla Clark finished fifth in the girls race in a time of 20:14.01. Like Marshall, the Warriors did not field a full team. Freshman Amelia Washburn took 38th in a time of 24:27.43, while another freshman, Olivia Henderson (27:36.71) and junior Savannah Lyman (30:48.64) rounded out the Warrior lineup. There were a total of 98 runners in the girls race.

(Fairfield) — Mt. Carmel runners were in the field at the Tom Wickham Invitational held Saturday on a 2.75-mile course at Leo French Park in Fairfield. The Aces boys team finished fifth in a race won by the host Mules. Freshman Zane Swinson finished 10th overall in a time of 17:58.00 to lead the team. Freshman Zeke Meier (18th in a time of 19:10.50), sophomore Wyatt Rooney (26th, 19:48.80), sophomore T.J. Singh (36th, 21:04.10), and junior Kadin Melahn (37th, 21:13.50) rounded out the scoring lineup. A total of 53 runners were in the field.

There were only two full teams in the girls race, with Fairfield claiming the title over Hamilton County. Mt. Carmel’s top runner was junior Dani Fisher who finished 10th overall in a time of 22:48.80. Next came sophomore Zoie Randall (12th in a time of 24:12.10). There were 24 runners in the field.

(Clinton) — Olney boys finished in third place at a major central Illinois invitational in Clinton on Saturday, while Olney girls took 10th.

There were 30 boys teams and 208 runners at the Clinton Light Up Cross Country Invitational, while the girls race featured 25 teams and 179 individual entries.

The three-mile boys race went down to the wire, with Chaz Oberkfell of Gillespie edging out Olney junior Quaid Berger by 1.5 seconds. Berger’s time of 14:42.76 led the Tiger contingent, which also produced team points from: sophomore Judah Dicks (seventh place in 15:17.37), sophomore Tristin Butler (14th place in 15:38.86), sophomore Landon Livingston (55th, 17:05.17), and sophomore Austin Kuenstler (133rd, 19:04.95).

Senior Josie Ginder led the Tiger girls with an 11th-place finish and a time of 18:41. 29 on the three-mile Clinton layout. Klaire Eighner of Maroa-Forsyth won the race in a time of 17:07.74.

Junior Lily Stevens and sophomore Isabella Stevens were right next to each other at the close, with Lily finishing 33rd in a time of 20:43.57, and Isabella in 34th in 20:46.32. Senior Briley Kocher (74th place, 21:02.70) and Karlee Piercefie (97th, 21:47.28)  rounded out the scoring lineup for Olney.
