And then there were two

There are only two teams left in the Little Illini Conference with perfect season records after Week 4 action. Here’s a recap:

Olney (2-0, 4-0) 57, Marshall (1-1, 3-1) 19

Olney scored twice in each quarter to pull away to a 57-19 victory over Marshall in a battle of LIC unbeatens.

There was close to 1,000 yards of total offense between the two teams. Olney totaled 516 yards, Marshall finished with 432 yards. There were 35 first downs between the two.

Quarterback Gavyn Cothern led the way again for the winners, with 113 yards and two touchdowns in the air to go with 117 yards and two scores on the ground. But, it was also a big night for running back Xavier Owusu-Gyan, who finished with 18 carries for 182 yards and one TD.

Marshall running back Lucca Giannavola put up big numbers, too, running for 225 yards on 28 attempts with three touchdowns. Giannavola stands at 698 yards on the season (second in the LIC to Cothern’s 739) and is 132 yards away from the 2,000-yard career mark.

Mt. Carmel (2-0,2-2) 32, Newton (0-2, 1-3) 7

After the Aces had built a 13-0 lead by halftime. Newton scored early in the third period to pull to within 13-7. Mt. Carmel then regrouped with a score midway through the frame and pulled away from there with two fourth-quarter touchdowns.

Mt. Carmel ran the ball on 55 of 62 offensive plays. Three backs finished with over 100 yards on the ground: running back Sitaleki Militoni (10 carries for 123 yards), quarterback River Deisher (17/120), and veteran running back Elliott Acree (21/112), who is now 112 yards away from the 2,000-yard mark for his career. Each scored a touchdown as well.

Conversely, Newton threw the ball on 36 of 42 plays. Quarterback Hayden Mulvey was 15-of-36 in the air for 147 yards and one touchdown, a 39-yard flip to Dexter Fulton for the Eagles lone score.

Newton rushed for 10 yards on only six attempts, but it marked for the record the third straight game the Aces’ defense has allowed less than 100 yards on the ground.

Paris (1-1, 3-1) 48, Lawrenceville (0-2, 1-3) 7

A 22-yard touchdown run by Carter Crippes in the second quarter put Paris ahead to stay, 12-7. The Tigers then scored 36 unanswered second-half points to pull away to the win on Homecoming Night.

The game-clinching drive was set up by an interception by Kipton Bradford.

The Indians lone score came on a Nick Morehead 2-yard run two minutes into the second quarter. It was big at the time, giving Lawrenceville the lead 7-6 after Crippes had opened the scoring early in the game with an 18-yard TD run.

Paris had a solid 1-2 punch on the ground with Crippes and Dawson Rogers. Crippes finished with 162 yards on 18 carries, while Rogers ended up with 142 yards on as many carries.

#7 1A Casey-Westfield (4-0, 2-0) 38, Robinson (0-2, 1-3) 14

Robinson took the early lead on a 25-yard scoring pass from Reese Johnson to A.J. Knoblett, but the seventh-ranked Warriors rallied for the win to remain unbeaten.

Casey-Westfield answered the Maroons score with a drive of its’ own, but had to settle for a 27-yard field goal by Wyatt Erickson to cut the deficit to 7-3. The Warriors finally grabbed the lead for good in the second quarter after Robinson fumbled a punt attempt away at its’ own 10-yard line, which quarterback Nolan Clement quickly converted into a 6-yard touchdown run two plays later.

A Daryn Hupp interception then gave Casey-Westfield the ball right back, and Clement hit Will Moore from 37 yards away for a touchdown that suddenly made it 17-7 with 8:19 remaining before halftime.
