Mt. Carmel is celebrating while the rest of the Little Illini Conference is contemplating.
The Golden Aces wrapped up their fourth football title in six years in the league with a 40-0 victory over Marshall on Friday night. As for the rest of the conference, it is now a dead sprint to the regular-season finish line, as we wait and see how many teams will make the field in the newly-expanded IHSA state tournament. Olney downed Casey-Westfield, 42-20, to earn a fourth win and a cinched spot in the playoffs. Four LIC teams are in for now, with the hope that three more could still join the fray when the 384-team, eight-class brackets are unveiled on Saturday night.
Three games are on tap this Friday night, while the league finale (Olney at Robinson) at 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon could still be packed with playoff implications. So, it’s down to the wire!
