(ROXANA) — Haley Ochs of Newton won the Class 1A Sectional golf championship on Tuesday at Belk Park Golf Course in Roxana. The senior now gets to top off her high school golf career with a trip to the IHSA state tournament, which begins on Friday at Red Tail Run Golf Course in Decatur.
Ochs fired a round of 2-over par 74 to capture the top spot in the Sectional field, and will be the only Little Illini Conference team or individual at the two-day, 36-hole state tournament. Ochs saved some of her best golf for the biggest stage to date. She finished fourth in last month’s LIC championship tournament with a round of 86, and took second last week at the Robinson Regional with a 76.
The top three teams also qualified for the state finals. Breese Mater Dei won the team championship with a collective round of 316 strokes, 18 shots better than Okawville. Alton Marquette and Salem tied for the last spot with rounds of 341. Mt. Carmel, the only LIC girls team to advance to the sectional level, finished in a tie for 10th place with a round of 366, and bowed out of the state series after a record-tying run of five consecutive state championships.
