Mt. Carmel girls, four individuals advance to state

The Little Illini Conference will send one team and four individuals to this weekend’s IHSA Golf state championship tournaments, after qualifying in Sectional play on Monday, Oct. 6. The girls Class 1A state tournament will be held at Red Tail Run Golf Club in Decatur on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 10-11. LIC boys will play at two different sites: Class 1A at Prairie Vista Golf Course in Bloomington, Class 2A at Weibring Golf Course in Normal.

Here’s a recap of Sectional play:

GIRLS
Mt. Carmel will get a chance to extend its’ state championship dynasty to a record-tying fifth year in a row after winning the Class 1A Sectional title at Monticello. The Lady Aces recorded a 28-shot victory in the 12-team field, carding a team total of 294. Effingham  St. Anthony (322) and Monticello (325) finished second and third and qualified for state as well. The top 10 individuals not a part of the advancing teams also advance. Leah Correll of Robinson qualified with a round of 80.

Zeme Moore of Mt. Carmel was the medalist with a round of 69, one shot ahead of teammate Miley Kennard’s 70.

Mt. Carmel finished with the lowest score from among the 12 advancing Class 1A teams (the top three teams from the four sectional tourneys). Quincy Notre Dame, the winner at Jacksonville, was next at 303. Those two teams are also ranked first and second in the latest iWannaker Class 1A ratings. The Lady Aces are ranked second overall in Illinois, behind Lincolnshire Stevenson of Class 2A. Coach Karin Kelsey’s team is also rated 54th in the country, according to iWannamaker.

BOYS
None of the three LIC teams to qualify for the Sectional will advance to state as a unit, but three individuals are going: Carson Hall and Ryan Hosfield of Casey-Westfield, along with Reese Glover of Olney. Hall and Hosfield will play in the Class 1A state tournament, while Glover will play in the Class 2A finals.

Casey-Westfield had to make the long trek to suburban Elmhurst for the Class 1A Sectional. The Warriors finished sixth with a team round of 339. Host Timothy Christian won with a score of 309. Also advancing as a team: Prairie Central (320) and Elgin Harvest Christian (322).

Hall and Hosfield both had solid rounds to easily make the state tournament field. Hall carded a 76, good for fifth among all golfers, and Hosfield’s round of 79 was tied for eighth place.

Mt. Carmel qualified for the Class 1A Sectional at Teutopolis, but the Aces finished seventh as a team and did not advance. Champion Red Bud, host T-town and Father McGivney qualified for the state finals.

Sophomore Zane Wilcox led the Golden Aces with a round of 79, but missed the state cut by only one shot.

Olney missed the cut as a team in the Class 2A Sectional at Highland, but Reese Glover qualified as an individual after a round of 72, good for sixth overall. LIC champion Ayden Nealis fired a 76, but missed advancing to state by two strokes.

The three teams to qualify for state from Highland were: champion Effingham St. Anthony, the host Bulldogs, and Alton Marquette.
