Mt. Carmel overwhelms field to win LIC golf title

(OLNEY) — Just how talented is the Mt. Carmel girls golf team?

Consider this: Last year’s Illinois state champion Zeme Moore managed only a third-place finish for her team in Wednesday’s Little Illini Conference championship tournament held at Richland Country Club in Olney. Yet, the Lady Aces still had enough firepower to win the title by a crushing 105 strokes.

Currently ranked No. 1 in Class 1A, second overall in the state, and 38th nationally, according to the latest iWannamaker rankings, the Aces can now turn their attention towards winning a fifth consecutive state 1A crown when IHSA post-season play begins next week at the Regional level.

Mt. Carmel finished with a team total of 324 strokes. Robinson was next at 429, followed by Olney (483) and Marshall (503). Two other LIC teams, Newton and Casey-Westfield, do not field full teams but had two players each in the field.

Miley Kennard and Ava Brumagin both fired 18-hole rounds of 79 to finish as co-medalists in regulation. Kennard then broke the tie in a one-hole playoff with her teammate. Moore finished third with an 81, followed by Ella Turner’s 85. Only the top four scores count towards the total, but each team can enter five golfers. So, Miranda Kennard’s round of 85 finished off a top-five sweep for the winners.

Moore, Miley Kennard and Brumagin are seniors for coach Karin Kelsey’s team. Turner and Miranda Kennard are sophomores.

The top 12 finishers earn all-conference honors, the top seven to the First Team, and four to the Second Team. The five from Mt. Carmel are joined on the First Team by Haley Ochs of Newton, who carded a 90, and Leah Correll of Robinson, who fired a 92.

Named to the second team, in finishing order, are: Peyton Lindley (Newton), Mya Wright (Robinson), Addie Stevenson (Robinson), and Natalie Richards (Robinson).

Inclement weather caused a one-hour delay to the start of the tournament, but was not a factor once play began.
