(Harrisburg) — Mt. Carmel set a new team record and tied an individual mark on Aug. 28th at Shawnee Hills Golf Course here.
The Lady Aces set a new nine-hole team mark with an eight under par round of 136 in easily winning a five-team tournament. That total was 35 shots better than runner-up Harrisburg’s 171. Benton took third at 179, while Eldorado finished fourth with a 194. Du Quoin brought individual golfers, but not a full team.
What made the record-setting performance memorable wasn’t even the fact that all four starters recorded rounds in the 30s. Mt. Carmel actually had seven golfers finish sub-40, with one almost landing in the 20s.
“I’m so proud of all the girls, their determination to continually lower their scores,” wrote veteran coach Karin Kelsey on Facebook after the match.
Defending state champion Zeme Moore tied the school record with a 6-under 30, a round which featured two eagle 3s and two birdies. Miley Kennard, like Moore a senior, finished with a 3-under 33, while senior Ava Brumagin fired an even-par 36. Others under 40 included Miranda Kennard (37), Elyse Swanson (38), Makayla Bolden (38) and Ella Turner (39). Three of the sub-40 rounds came from sophomores.
