We are only one week into the girls basketball season, and there is already a milestone to report!
Lucy Moore of Casey-Westfield scored 23 points in the Warriors’ 51-12 victory over Villa Grove on Monday night (Nov. 17). One of those points sent her into the history books with her 1,000th career point. Not that Lucy is done by any stretch, as the Warriors finished a hectic opening week with a 5-0 record.
Casey-Westfield also recorded wins over Chrisman (36-19), Arcola (41-3), Covington, Ind. (54-19)and Fithian Oakwood (30-28).
Perennial power Paris is out of the gate quickly at 3-1. They hosted the North American Lighting tournament, which brought in five other teams, including LIC mate Olney. The host Tigers finished in second place, losing to Teutopolis, 59-50, in the finals. They opened with a 71-22 win over Danville, followed by a 65-24 romp over Terre Haute North. Paris then defeated Olney in the semifinals, 59-50 (a non-conference game in the standings).
Olney downed Charleston, 72-20, in their opener, then lost to Teutopolis, 50-37, in the second round. After the loss to Paris, Olney bounced back to claim third with a 64-35 win over Danville.
Newton is the only other LIC school to match Casey-Westfield with an undefeated start – the Eagles are 2-0 thus far. They opened with a 48-39 home victory over Fairfield, before hitting the road for a 58-38 win at WSS. The Eagles raced to a 35-11 lead in the first half and cruised in from there.
Lawrenceville and Marshall are both 1-1 after the first week of the season. Lawrenceville opened with a 47-40 triumph at Flora, before falling in their home opener to Carmi. Marshall, meanwhile, lost to Tuscola, 49-42, on Opening Night, before beating Altamont, 65-60, on Friday night.
Robinson had the longest road trip of the opening week, and perhaps for the entire season, when the Maroons traveled 200 miles to Galesburg, northwest of Peoria. The Maroons came into the Galesburg Shootout 0-1, after falling to Effingham in their season opener, 55-18. The competition in Galesburg proved just as fierce. Robinson lost to the host Silver Streaks (enrollment 1,127), 49-24, on Friday, before bowing to two more larger schools, Chatham Glenwood (1,475), 45-25, and Pekin (1,675), 52-40, on Saturday.
Mt. Carmel, with four starters back from last year’s IHSA Class 2A third-place team, lost its’ opener to Castle, a large-school southwestern Indiana power with an enrollment of 1,968, by a score of 55-51. Then, on Saturday, the Golden Aces came up short at Marion, 61-57, to finish the week at 0-2.
Week Two begins with a flurry, with Mt. Carmel hosting Teutopolis on Monday. The Wooden Shoes are already 2-0 vs. Little Illini Conference teams this season.
Action continues at the Fithian Oakwood tourney, and play begins in the Bob Kerans tournament at Newton.
