(ROBINSON) — With all four of their entries receiving seeds going into Friday’s Little Illini Conference girls tennis tournament here, the Paris Tigers seemed to have the best chance of winning the team championship. On paper.

“The point totals looked close enough that one upset might be enough to shift things in another team’s favor,” lamented Paris coach Stefan Aydt as he looked at the field in advance.

His Tigers weren’t just satisfied with being the favorites on paper.  They went out and proved it on the courts.

Paris earned a first and fifth place finish in singles play, plus a second and fourth in the doubles division, to easily outdistance the six-team field and win their first LIC girls tennis title in school history. The Tigers finished with 25.5 points to claim the crown. Casey-Westfield won a three-way battle for second place. The Warriors had 14 points, to third-place Newton’s 12, and Robinson’s 11. Mt. Carmel (10 points for fifth) and Olney (8) rounded out the field.

Sophomore Paedyn Keys led the way for Paris by capturing the singles title. After receiving a first-round bye, Keys, who entered as the No. 2 seed,  defeated fourth-seed Ezha Biyok of Olney, 6-4, 6-2, in the finals. Also in singles, Kaidence Eveland advanced in the backdraw to finish fifth.

The Tigers shined in doubles play as well. The duo of Bella Moreschi and Myah Bartos took second, while the tandem of Shelby Fry and Ava Barrett wound up fourth.

Paris landed Keys, Moreschi, and Bartos were each named All-Conference First Team selections. Fry and Barrett were both Honorable Mention picks.

It was the first conference championship in girls tennis for Paris since 1988, when they won the Apollo Conference title.
