(MARSHALL) — In a day that pretty much went according to plan, Robinson High School’s girls’ basketball team provided the one upset on the day in the first round of the Little Illini Conference Tournament at Marshall High School Saturday. The fifth-seeded Lady Maroons knocked off fourth-seeded Newton, 44-41, exacting revenge for an earlier loss this season and extending their winning streak to nine games.

Robinson led 13-7 after one quarter and 24-18 at halftime, but Newton won the third quarter 15-8 to take a 33-32 leading heading to the fourth quarter. However, the Lady Maroons won the final period 12-8 to rally for the win.

Leah Correll led RHS with 18 points, while Zoe Tuttle was also in double figures with 14.
Alani Bergbower was the only double-digit scorer for Newton, as she led the Lady Eagles with 17 points.

Also on Saturday, top-seeded Paris (16-3) jumped to a 20-0 lead and overwhelmed Casey-Westfield, 58-22, to earn a spot opposite Robinson in a Tuesday semi-final.  In the bottom half of the bracket, No. 2-seed and defending champion Mt. Carmel (15-7) downed host Marshall (10-7), 65-33. And in the nitecap, Olney (11-8) moved on with a 57-32 win over Lawrenceville (8-13). Those two winners will meet in the other semi on Tuesday.

Tournament play continues on Monday with the consolation semifinals. Newton meets Casey-Westfield (9-14) in the opener, followed by a matchup between Marshall and Lawrenceville.

Another points milestone to report. Friday night, Marshall High School senior Lynn Welborn was recognized for reaching the 1,000-point mark for her career, a feat accomplished on Dec. 28 at the Dieterich Holiday Tournament. T.Ray Henry of Wabash News detailed on social media what makes this milestone so amazing: “Lynn joins her mom and her aunt in Marshall High School’s 1,000-point club.”

Congratulations Lynn!
