Three big league games on tap this week

It’s another important week for Little Illini Conference girls basketball teams. There are three league games on tap, including one battle of league unbeatens. With only two weeks left before the conference tournament, every team is jockeying for a better seed position.

Thursday, the list of conference unbeatens will be trimmed from three to two when Olney (1-0 in league play, 9-5 overall) plays at league-leader Mt. Carmel (3-0, 11-6). Olney comes in on a one-game winning streak, but has not played since Dec. 29, when the Tigers defeated Salem (10-7), 48-36. Mt. Carmel, meanwhile, will be looking to snap a two-game losing streak. The Golden Aces fell to Henderson County, Ky. (8-6), 69-47, on Monday.

The other LIC unbeaten is Paris (2-0, 13-2). The Tigers are on a roll with five straight wins, including a 60-35 victory over Monticello (10-6) on Monday. Next up is a home game against Casey-Westfield (0-1, 9-9) on Friday. The Warriors picked up a big win on Monday, defeating Charleston (2-13), 38-35, in overtime, snapping a five-game losing streak.

Lawrenceville and Newton are both very much in contention in the LIC race. Both are 1-1 and tied for fourth in the standings, and both square off on Thursday night in Newton. Lawrenceville (1-1, 6-11) will be playing its’ third straight game, after defeating North Central, Ind. 68-8 on Tuesday, then hosting Martinsville (9-7) on Wednesday. Newton (1-1, 11-6) has won five of its’ last six games, including a 67-39 home victory over Neoga (5-10) on Monday.

Marshall (0-3, 5-6) and Robinson (1-3, 9-7) do not play in the league this week. Marshall’s next LIC game is on Thursday, Jan. 15 at home against Olney, while Robinson gets back into league play next Monday at Lawrenceville.
