Two upsets in first round of LIC boys basketball tournament

(ROBINSON) — As if the weather wasn’t causing enough angst in Little Illini Conference basketball circles, then there was the action on the court itself. Of the four games played here Saturday in the LIC boys tournament, two ended in upsets. Only the top two seeds – No. 1-ranked (Class 1A) Lawrenceville and Casey-Westfield – got out of the first round unscathed.

The tournament schedule, already altered on Saturday to allow southern teams an early exit to get home before the winter storm hit, is being changed again due to schools being cancelled on Monday and Tuesday. Losers of the four Saturday tilts now return on Thursday for consolation games, while the four winners won’t be back until Wednesday’s championship semi-final round.

Here’s the way it went in the first round:

Mt. Carmel 61, Newton 52
The Golden Aces (11-10) inched back over the .500 mark on the season with their fifth win in their last seven games. This was the second meeting in four days between the two, Newton (11-8) having won the regular-season matchup last week in Newton, 49-42. The Eagles were seeded third coming in to the tournament, Mt. Carmel fifth.

Lawrenceville 60, Paris 44
The Indians 16-point win was the widest margin of the first round. Lawrenceville, No. 1 in the AP Class 1A poll,  moved to 19-1 with their sixth straight win. Noah Wilson led the winners with 17 points. Jayden Goff added 13 points, and Zander Cessna 12. Paris dropped to 11-12 with the loss.

Marshall 55, Olney 49
The Lions got 21 points from Payton McGuire to spring the upset. McGuire added five assists to the cause. Tucker Osborn led Marshall on the glass, with nine rebounds. It was a turnaround of sorts for fifth-seeded Marshall (8-10), which lost to No. 4 seed Olney (8-14), 50-46, in the regular-season conference game on Jan. 9.

Casey-Westfield 56, Robinson 45
Leighton Jones scored 10 points in the first half as Casey-Westfield (14-7) grabbed a 22-16 lead by halftime. Jones doubled that total in the third quarter alone as the Warriors built a commanding 14-point cushion heading into the fourth quarter. Robinson fell to 6-15 with the loss.

Here is the latest revised schedule:
